[Tampa, Fla.] — September 22, 2025 — Tampa-based deep-tech innovator Detect-ION today announced the official opening of its Breath Research Lab, marking a milestone in the company’s mission to develop fast, non-invasive diagnostics for safer and healthier lives through early disease detection, chemical threat detection, and environmental monitoring.
The Breath Research Lab is the latest addition in Detect-ION’s 4,000-square-foot headquarters, which includes a state-of-the-art instrumentation and R&D lab equipped with High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) capabilities and a rapid prototyping shop. The new lab will serve as a hub for clinical research, accelerating the company’s path from research to real-world impact.
The Breath Research Lab opens just as Detect-ION prepares to launch the second campaign in its breath-diagnostic study, which aims to improve non-invasive diagnostic screenings for respiratory illnesses. This research is part of the DTRA & DIU EXHALE Program, a U.S. Department of War (previously Department of Defense) initiative supporting warfighter safety and mission preparedness.
“Having an onsite lab is a game-changer,” said Ashish Chaudhary, Ph.D., CEO of Detect-ION. “It enhances our operational agility, improves oversight of research processes, and lets us rapidly iterate on new clinical strategies. We’re not just developing next-generation diagnostics—we’re building the infrastructure to validate them at scale effectively.”
The onsite lab offers several key advantages that enhance both operational efficiency and participant experience. It streamlines research study operations, reducing delays between study phases, while enabling real-time data integration and faster feedback loops between engineering and clinical teams. The dedicated space also improves the participant journey creating smooth check-ins, and consistent care throughout the study. Located just minutes from Tampa International Airport, the lab features a private entrance and central access point for volunteers and partners across the Tampa Bay area.
Detect-ION’s Point-of-Care Breath Diagnostics platform, CLARION, aims to provide accurate, affordable, and non-invasive respiratory infection screening using chip-scale mass spectrometry—a major leap toward accessible frontline diagnostics.
